International Women’s Day Celebrations and
Inauguration of (WORLD OF WOMEN) Women’s Club
08 MAR 10

Womens Day

The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it came to commemorate the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions.

March 8

The 1932 Soviet poster dedicated to the 8th of March holiday. The text reads: "8th of March is the day of rebellion of the working women against kitchen slavery" and "Down with the oppression and narrow-mindedness of household work!” Originally in the USSR the holiday had a clear political character, emphasizing the role of the Soviet state in the liberation of women from their second-class-citizen status.

In 1975, during International Women’s year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8th March. Two years later in December 1977, the general assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations day for women’s rights and international peace to be observed on any day of the year by member states; in accordance with their historical and national traditions. In adopting its resolution, the general assembly recognized the role of women in peace efforts and development and urged an end to discrimination and an increase of support for women’s full and equal participation.
